SEC Launches Free Online Courses to Boost Financial Literacy, Support Filipino Entrepreneurs and Investors

Kzen PH

Manila, Philippines — In a move to strengthen financial literacy and enhance business competence among Filipinos, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has launched a revamped version of the SEC Academy, a free online learning platform offering courses on personal finance, investing, entrepreneurship, and scam prevention.

The upgraded site, accessible at academy.sec.gov.ph, was relaunched as part of the Commission’s intensified campaign to empower the public with credible, easy-to-understand financial education. The initiative also forms part of this year’s observance of Investor Protection Week, carrying the theme “InvestED Tayo sa Kinabukasang Sigurado.”

A Push for Accessible and Inclusive Financial Education

SEC Chairperson Francis Lim said the Academy is designed to make financial learning widely accessible — from students and young professionals to small business owners and retirees. The Commission noted that low financial literacy continues to expose many Filipinos to scams, poor investment decisions, and missed opportunities in business growth.

“The SEC Academy is open to everyone because financial literacy is for everyone,” Lim said in earlier announcements, emphasizing the need for an informed public capable of making responsible financial choices.

What the SEC Academy Offers

The platform hosts free, self-paced courses developed by SEC regulators, academics, and industry professionals. Among the offerings are:

Personal Finance — Budgeting, saving strategies, debt management, and long-term financial planning.

Investing and Capital Markets — Basics of investing, types of securities, sustainable investing, and how businesses raise capital.

Entrepreneurship — Business planning, understanding markets, and managing a growing enterprise.

Investor Protection — Identifying scams, understanding regulatory safeguards, and evaluating investment risks.

Each module is designed to be beginner-friendly while still comprehensive enough to equip learners with practical, actionable knowledge.

Integrated Efforts With Schools and Local Communities

The SEC continues to expand its educational reach through partnerships with the Department of Education (DepEd) as part of efforts to integrate financial literacy and entrepreneurship concepts into basic education. The agency has also held nationwide roadshows providing free seminars on business financing and investment literacy to various communities.

These efforts are aimed at building a financially resilient public and a more informed generation of future entrepreneurs.

Strengthening Market Integrity Through Education

Aside from helping Filipinos make smarter money decisions, the SEC sees the Academy as crucial in combating the surge of online investment scams. By teaching the public how to spot red flags and verify legitimate investment opportunities, the agency hopes to reduce the number of victims falling prey to fraudulent schemes.

A well-informed investor base, the Commission says, plays a key role in maintaining trust and stability in the country’s financial markets.

Opportunities for Entrepreneurs

For MSMEs, the Academy’s entrepreneurship and capital-markets courses provide insights into funding options beyond traditional loans — including equity financing, crowd-based funding, and other SEC-regulated fundraising activities.

Financially literate entrepreneurs are also better positioned to manage cash flow, expand operations responsibly, and avoid costly missteps that could undermine business growth.

A Stepping Stone Toward a More Financially Informed Philippines

With free and accessible online classes, the SEC Academy represents a significant step toward democratizing financial education in the country. While challenges such as limited digital access remain, the SEC believes initiatives like this help foster a culture of responsible financial behavior and entrepreneurial confidence.
